The Theme : «On Air to a Kite String»

Un spectacle unique au Monde

A show unique in the world
In 2008, Dieppe will turn its seafront into a giant stave of wind. The kites from all over the world (38 countries) will play their most beautiful melody tuned “on air to a kite string”. Like every edition, the festival will be available in hundreds of colours on the theme of music and sound.
The invited delegations will especially create brand new kites inspired by music and sounds produced by the wind. They will also make the public discover traditional instruments and music from their country (e.g.: didgeridoo…).
Every country has worked before the festival in order to present, during the event, innovative demonstrations and projects. Thanks to this method, the public makes the most of a show unique in the world, and on each edition.

Guest of honour : Latin America

Co-ordinated by the Association Yaripa from Medellin - COLOMBIA

Its name is Papalote in Mexico, Barilete in Argentina and Guatemala, Volantín in Chile, Papagayo or Pavano in Nicaragua, Papelote in Honduras, Piscucha in Salvador and Nicaragua or Cometa in many other South American countries (Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Uruguay...). Kites are very popular there.
Every country in Central and South America, even in the Carribean has its own kite traditions.
In 2008, the public will be able to discover the basics of the inheritance linked with traditions and cultures from Latin America.

Supervised and co-ordinated by the Association Yaripa from Medellin (whose goal is to promote ecology), the Colombian delegation, full of cultural diversity, will present the characteristics of all traditional Colombian kites.

Colombian association Yaripa, organizer of the project, worked hard since more than one year in order to associate the various areas of the country and to come in Dieppe with the ethnic minorities which have kite traditions, amongst other things, of the Indian tribes.

This year, several countries were linked with the Colombian team to make discover the whole of the kite traditions of South America and Central America . Brazil , Chile, Guatemala takes part in this project, but also two new delegations: one Ecuadorian, the other of the island of Curacao.

Les années passent, les traditions restent.
S’il est le symbole de paix et de liberté dans le monde, certains peuples considèrent le cerf-volant comme un moyen d’expression culturelle, et le Festival de Dieppe, de par son identité, y accorde une grande importance.

Traditional Kites

Years go by but traditions are still alive. If kite is the symbol of peace and freedom in the world, some peoples regard it as a mean of cultural expression, and the festival of Dieppe, thanks to its own identity, attaches a great importance to it.

Artistic Kites

Trend and Creation
Kite was an anachronistic object few years ago, now it finds the reasons of its success in its play aspect, its family practice and its ecological character. The need for dream, the wish to find an harmonious relation with nature give it its vitality. The diversity of its shapes and characteristics allow everybody to fly whatever the age.
Some people buy a first kite for their child and right after start flying. Then they dare buy for themselves or even build one for their pleasure. Those new experienced kite fliers make their own models more sophisticated, more beautiful, even artistic. Then the practice becomes a creative activity for adults, a practice synonymous with passion impossible to resist.

Glance at a new art of living
Place of relaxation and well-being, the festival of Dieppe gather artists and designers to make a temple of harmony and innovations of all kinds: colours, materials, unusual and air shapes.

The Creators’ Workshop, a workshop for artists in the heart of the village
Tendency for pure shapes, attraction and elegance of the prints, this workshop of the dreams is dedicated to creators and artists and contributes to the growth of the creation kite. This is the space of the festival where the contemporary developments about art kites take shape and are presented to the public. One discovers the more sophisticated and unusual methods of construction. The work of bamboo, the use of noble fabrics such as Nepalese paper and the transformation and the control of the materials are taught. The workshop becomes an inexhaustible spring of inspiration for the kite fliers as for the public.
Four creators participated in the creation of the workshop. They came from Netherlands, Germany, Canada and Austria.
During the latest editions, the project was developed with the active participation of French and Hungarian artists.
Visual artists, painters or sculptors, they all use the kite as a medium of creation. Henceforth, during each edition of the festival, new artists join the workshop and create genuine work of art on the theme of the festival. Dieppe has become the meeting of the creators of the sky.

The Creative Contest
One of the goals the association “Dieppe Capital of Kite” has lay down is to promote the action of artists through kite and in the long term, confer to kite the status of creation tool. The Creative Contest which takes place in the heart of the festival is one of the elements which allowed creators to assert the originality and the interest of their work. This year the contest is based on the theme “On Air to a Kite String” and will join music and sounds. It could be sounds kites. The contest will take place on Saturday 13th of September 2008 and will be one of the strong points of the festival. This creative contest of artistic kites, unique of its kind, allows the winners to be invited to other festivals in the world, to meet other cultures and, thus, to promote the image the artistic kite.

Stunt kites

Breathtaking ballets

Everybody has already seen on a beach a small colourful triangle spinning round in the sky. Sports kites appeared more than 25 years ago, and ever since have never stopped developing and appealing to new adepts. Even if more “extreme” sports such as the kitesurf have taken the spot those past few years, nevertheless it remains very present in every country in the world.

If kites have fascinated men since the dawn of time, now they become sports and stunt kites thanks to technological progress in aeronautics.
Kites have evolved as the years go by, and became a sports activity of its own. Some high schools’ professors have discovered its pedagogical aspect. They have learnt how to fly and have included it in school sports programs.
Stunt kites are flown in individual, in pairs or in team (generally 4 pilots or even more). There are true air ballets with music for each team and ballet.
The public loves those acrobatic ballets which give immediate sensations and strong emotions.

We will welcome in Dieppe teams known throughout the world. Before the festival, the teams meticulously prepare their ballets in order to show very high quality demonstrations. During all the week, the public will be able to watch the best pilots who will gather to present their achievements in a perfect combination of moves and figures.

The Flight in Méga Team : Let’s imagine the communion of the best stunt kites experts, together for the same show. It is downright magic on the lawns of the beach of Dieppe. An incredible aerial show will be given to the public during the Dieppe festival.

Fighting Kite

The fighting kite is a small, one line, stunt kite, usually made out of bamboo and paper. It is very light and strong. It needs little space to take off and rise, which gives the pilots a great freedom for flying whatever the place and wind conditions are. In the countries where it comes from, the fights usually take place on the roofs of the town.A fight of kites is played by two people. Pilots use a kite and a line made out of cotton and pounded glass powder. This powder makes the line abrasive and cutting. In India, this line is called “Manjha”. The aim of the fight is to cut the opponent’s line.
In Dieppe, the kite fights gather the adepts of the discipline. Reigning champions from all over the world will come and confront.
According to the types of fights, the rules are different but the principle stays the same: floor the opponent. Indian, Korean, Brazilian or Indonesian kites fight in duel, whereas the Japanese Rokkaku fights gather tens of fighters or a more pacific confrontation where the Thai male kite (Chula) has to bring in his territory the female kite (Pakpao). In any case, the practice of fighting kites requires great skill.
For about fifteen years, Ludovic Petit, president of the Manjha Club International, has made of the fighting kite his trade. This is how thousands of children made their fighting kites during pedagogic workshops, how many youth leaders received information, and how associations specialized in bamboo and paper kite making were born.
Today, in addition to kite making workshops, introductions to fighting kite flight are organized. Since the Dieppe Festival 2004, a fighting kite school has been born. Fighting kite is more and more wellknown and popular in schools.
For teachers, it is very rich as it enables them to teach geography, mathematics, fine arts…
Many plans for kite making are available in specialized associations and on the Internet.
Youth leaders think that this practice drains the aggressiveness of young people and enables them to confront each other throughout kites. Fighting kite is an aerial martial art.

Fighting Kite World Cup

Reserved for international professionals, the Fighting Kite World Cup takes place in a different country every year, in general in the country where the latest reigning champion comes from.
In 2008, it must have taken place in Bali. The Balinese organizers, faithful to Dieppe festival, decided that the world cup will be held in Dieppe.

Champions from all over the world will come and confront on the lawns of Dieppe. The qualifying heats will take place on the racecourse of Rouxmesnil-Bouteilles (commune in the suburbs of Dieppe).

Fighting Kite Junior French Championship

Since a short while, fighting kite clubs have started teaching to young people between 12 and 18. Then, they find another way to direct their energy. This martial practice requires an effort of concentration and discipline, very appreciated by the young. The idea is to organize inter towns meetings in the coming years.
The young people are quickly autonomous and take themselves in the game. Quite cheap, fighting kite is very accessible to young people and educators in terms of budget.
For the second time, the Junior French Cup of fighting kite will take place in Dieppe on September 6th and 7th. Reserved to teenagers, it will be open to young people from Dieppe and its area.

Fights and fights again!
Rokkakus fights and more!
Every day in the evening, the public will have the opportunity to attend great Rokkakus fights (Japanese fighting kites) on the main flight area to close the daily show.
The most interested and curious one could even start learning with the best specialists, and make with them their own fighting kite.

1 VS. 1 - NEW
Around 6:00PM, just before the Rokkakus fights, fights in twos will be presented to the public. The concept is to confront two countries who have a tradition of fighting kites but with different fighting techniques and kinds of kites, Korea and India for instance. Those fights will allow members of the Manjha Club International to explain to the public the characteristics of the kites and techniques.

Rules

The Game of the Wolf and the Sheep NEW
Surprise in Dieppe! Let’s come and see the wolf confronting the sheep. An aerial game based on humour, skill and… fighting kites. But who will keep this line safe: the predator or the prey?

Indoor Kite

Initiation and demonstrations: Let’s arouse your curiosity!
In 2006, an operation of discovery of the Indoor kite (whose aim is to fly a kite with no wind in a closed room) was put in place in collaboration with the Kite Club of Dieppe. These interventions took place during the festival in the high schools of Dieppe and its suburbs. These initiations were very successful with the young people.
In order to develop these activities, workshops will be offered to young people from Dieppe and its suburbs during the summer 2008 and they will have the opportunity to participate in “shows” during the event.
Before the festival
There will be interventions in high schools of Dieppe during school time. They will be supervised by instructors of the Kite Club of Dieppe. They will benefit from individual and collective initiations to fly Indoor fighting kites.
These interventions of discovery and practice of Indoor kite will take place in the framework of classes or UNSS (Association of school sports). Those kite activities will be offered in the framework of the “Open School” created in the four high schools of Dieppe in 2008.
This new practice of Indoor kite aims at adapting kite to a collective sport. Two teams of three kite fliers confront on a handball ground. The goal is to cut as much as possible the tail of the opposing kite.
These initiations will take place in a 7 meter-high sports room (with no ventilation, of course!). Inter-high schools challenges could be put in place.
The candidate high schools will be able to participate in the Fighting Kite Junior French Cup.

During the festival (8th to 12th September)

The Kite Club of Dieppe will make demonstrations of Indoor stunt kites (2 lines and 4 lines) for the high schools and will teach young people.
On September 10th, demonstrations of Indoor stunt kites (2 lines and 4 lines) will be organized in the city centre (Maison des Sports of Dieppe).
At the end of the evening, a 1 hour and a half show will be presented to the public. Famous kite fliers will show ballets of one-line and stunt kites with music and lights.
Initiations to stunt kites for the disabled
Initiations to one-line and stunt kites (2 lines) will be also offered to the disabled.

The Wind Gardens – Eole’s Melody

Wind produces sounds and music if a human hand knows how to guide it: Dieppe Kite Festival proves it. Exhibited on the beach, the Aeolian structures
form a unity where wind is both a conductor of a random score and a musician who plays several instruments.

The gathering of the Aeolian
structures offers the spectators an unusual and seaside stroll and creates the Wind Corridor. The first Wind Corridor was born in 1998 in Dieppe.

Those European people called themselves Aeolists. They give their plastic and music creation a spectacular feature by staging them in Dieppe seafront. Everybody finds his place in this permanent Aeolian concert.
New Aeolian structures and wind instruments are presented during each festival. The public walks up and down these corridors, to explore these creations the ones more amazing than the others. Among them, we can find percussions structures, the sound of which is produced by the resonance of a hurt object. The shape and materials of these objects are very various: tubes and plates in bamboo or metal, bells, walnut or shell bells, small bells, gongs, hollow wood drums, metallic
barrels and pans, glass bottles… We can add to this list some membranophones: drums, cans with diaphragm. And a rub instrument: the rattle.
We also discover musical bows, whistles (Chinese whistler kites from Nantong are one of the realisations the most ended for this instrument), mechanical objects of Aeolian music: percussion Aeolian mills, Aeolian harps (the sound of which was assimilated to “an access of great sadness doubled with a temptation to suicide” by Berlioz) or the eliphone (wind machine which imitates the sound of the wind).
As for the children, they could be in raptures about the wind toys, systems driven by the wind. In this field of action, the “wind gardeners” try to outdo each other in imagination. Everything is possible! From the weathercock to the scarecrow, from flags and banners to wind mills, from Aeolian sculptures to heterogeneous creations…
The wind corridor installed, the wind could then make its own music, without any trick: the whisper of the breeze, the howling of the storm.
Each creation arouses the curiosity of grown-ups and children. Kite making workshops are managed by guest kite flyers.
Very appreciated by the public, we will find them again in September with new creations.

The “Aeolian Concerto” : NEW
Creative Contest of Wind Gardens

Based on the quality and on the originality of the creations, and also on the theme “On air to a kite string”, the 1st official Aeolian structures contest will take place in Dieppe in 2008.
Thus “Dieppe Capital of Kite” whose aim is to promote the artistic feature of kites, will extend to the Aeolist world. This will be a new challenge to take up! They will have to prove that their art has become a true element of artistic creation.

Kite schools

An inter-generations sports activity

Stunt Kite School
Open to everybody, this school will be run, supervised and lead by the Cerf-Volant Club of Dieppe. The initiations will be looked after by professional pilots.

Fighting Kite School
Rokkakus, patang, layang layang, pang pae yon…
The school will be managed by members of the Manjha Club International and will be open to adults and teenagers.
Discovery or improving sessions are accessible during the whole week. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in friendly challenges with famous champions.

Photography and Aerial Video School
Since 1888, the successors of Arthur Batut have made aerial photography with kites. The use of a stable bearing kite and a light self-acting camera with a speed of sealing the highest possible gives results of high quality. Without reaching record altitudes, it is between 50 and 150 meters that the public will take amazing pictures.
Aerial photography has been very successful since few years.
All through the festival, the French Kite Club will train people who wish to learn how to practice these strange things.

Special Europe

The kite for an opening to the world

The EUROPEAN TOUR

The organization of a European kite festivals “tour” will get under way in the summer 2008 in collaboration with festivals taking place before and after Dieppe.
The goal is to increase the communication of the festival at European level, make easier the coming of foreign kite fliers, promote the town of Dieppe and draw a huge number of tourists to Dieppe.
Leaving from Berlin, this big European « caravan » will first go to the English festivals of Portsmouth and Bristol, will involve maximum British people to Dieppe festival, and will finish its epic with people from Dieppe and English kite fliers in the German capital Berlin. The team of Dieppe Capital of Kite will take part in those festivals in order to promote Dieppe one.

In Dieppe, in the village, a stand « European Festivals » will be set up animated by the organizers of the partners’ festivals of Dieppe. This stand will allow the public to discover other European kite events like Dieppe.
The cities of Berlin (Germany), Bristol, Portsmouth (United Kingdom) and St Brévin (France) will take part in this common project.

Childhood and Youth

During all the festival, the Childhood and Youth pole will welcome child, families, school groups, recreation centres as well as disabled. This pole will inform and advise the public and lead various activities and workshops.

Practical information:

On this area, there is a space reserved to groups where they can safely leave their personal effects, a sheltered picnic area and place which allow the parents to sit or to have a coffee or a drink.
Moreover, there will be free access to public lavatory for the classes and groups who will visit the workshops of the Childhood and Youth pole.

KITE – For an International Solidarity

L’AFRIQUE AU COEUR : Africa at heart

The Belgian association “Africa at heart” and the “Goutapansou” (comity of the village of Goubré) in Burkina Faso, during an exchange of drawings between two primary schools, wonder: “what if those drawings were put on kites?” That was just when the project “Our drawings fly” was launched.
The idea is to make those child’s drawings known through kites and to launch an exchange between a school of Dieppe and Goubré school.
Le project is christened “Sign my sky” and lead by four Belgian people: two professors of fine arts and two kite fliers.
In November 2007, one of the professors went to Burkina Faso for the “drawing part”. When he came back, the material has been packaged to be built as kites. In December 2007, a kite flier also went to Burkina Faso with the kites to teach the young child.
Each kite is made out of paper and with a wood frame. About ten kites from Burkina Faso were built by child of the primary school of Goubré. The drawings are painted with brush on wrapping paper of bags of cement (which you can easily find on the markets of the village).
This project is about the interpretation of animist signs engraved on the stone steles of the tombs of the féticheurs (priest in the animist religion). Each sign has a precise meaning and tells about moral quality, physic aspect, social status, and age… of the deceased.
In Burkina Faso, those steles have virtually disappeared apart from some places in the north of the country.

A little explanation

Animism is widespread in various human societies, and mainly in Africa.
Animism is a vision of the universe inhabited by charitable and evil-minded spirits and by genius endowed with the power of having influence on the life of the living. The spirit is present in every being and even in inanimate objects; it can be the spirit of a dead ancestor who has become a deity and even a spirit of the nature.
The fetish is an object carved in wood or sculpted out of stone, or even worked with animal hairs, skins, horns or bones in which the spirits are supposed to come and live at the end of magical rituals.
During the kite festival of Dieppe 2008, the Belgian team of the association “Africa at heart” will present photographs, and an explanation about the signs and animism. Of course, they will fly those kites which will be presented to the public for the first time.

Exhibitions

An area dedicated to the Exhibition is settled in the central alley of the village of kites. The invited delegations spontaneously appropriate this space to exhibit some of their kites. Thus, the public is able to discover and see kites from all over the world from very close.

Lightness exhibited
Claude Léa Commalonga will exhibit her paper and bamboo kites. She makes research on shape and its impact on the landscape. She builds her kites with very varied plants from the approaches to the places where she lives, in the poor, hard and imposing lands of southern Aveyron (south of France) or in the dry pine forests near Montpellier. She gets undressed and fragile materials with smooth tones of the land which are a harmonious link between earth and sky.

ASEAN KITE COUNCIL (AKC)
The AKC is a civil-society organization (CSO) accredited by the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). The Filipino delegation, representative of the AKC, will present an exhibition of traditional kites and banners to explain kite traditions in the 10 countries members of the AKC.

The Philately of Kite
The Dieppe association of philately will be present in the kites’ village. It will look after a standing post desk and will exhibit a philatelic collection on the theme of kite.
Amateurs could find philatelic souvenirs (postcards with kites) and benefit, during the first weekend of the festival, from a “first day” postmark.

Rokkakus and Japanese kites
Two exhibitions about Japanese kites will be presented. One of them will be about all kinds of Japanese kites, and the other about the fighting kites, the “Rokkakus”.

One hundred years ago… a kite – Alain, a Norman philosopher is passionately fond of…
On 27th September 1908, an article of the Norman philosopher and reporter Alain was published in “La Dépêche de Rouen et de Normandie”.
Since 2000, this typescript has belonged to the library Jean Renoir who, in the framework of the centenary of its publication, will celebrate Kite through an exhibition from 5th to 29th of September.
Program: Patrimonial documents about the aeronautics and in particular kite effervescence at this time, its use in air photography, its military and strategic use, its history and origins… (varnishing and conference on September 5th).
The exhibition will also present the kite in Dieppe through photographs, posters of Dieppe Capital of Kite since the creation of the event and a philatelic interpretation of the theme with the history of the stamp “Dieppe Cerf-Volant” (original documents: engravers, works of artists…).

The Village of Kites

One of the main characteristics of Dieppe International Kite Festival is its international character with the participation of 35 to 40 countries on each edition.

The village of the kites is a place of meetings and direct exchanges between the public and the delegations.

The lovers and the world best experts meet during 9 days on the 8-hectare lawns of the beach of Dieppe. To welcome them, there are about 40 colourful stands where each delegation appropriates a reserved area and presents its kites, its cultural and culinary specificities and many others interests.

This year, according to the theme of 2008, the delegations will present the instruments and the music of their country.
Reception and enquiry desks will also be settled for the visitors and the kite fliers, and also: creation and exhibition areas, a Childhood and Youth pole, kites shops, press desk and an “Institutions” space, a bar-restaurant…

This ephemeral village, a true crossroads of the world, is an invitation to travel and comes back every two year, at every edition of the festival.
