Six giants from Sumpango - Guatemala
Giants of Sumpango, in Guatemala, can reach a 15 meters height. Exposed at the time of the flight, these giants overhang crowd but they are other kites, of a more modest size (8 meters all the same) which takes flight.
An imposing object which attracts the glances.
It is certainly the size which impresses (some measure more than fifteen meters) but these giants, that they come from Japan, from Guatemala, or besides, are also worth for the cultural traditions which they carry. Those of Sumpango, realized by all the village community, the grounds of takes-off find each year on November 1st. At All Saints' day, indeed, the Guatemalans make fly of the kites in order to honour their late ; over there it is considered that the kites represent windows which make it possible to communicate with the spirits. Those of Sumpango, while coming in Dieppe, for the first time of their history will leave their country and will fly under the sky of Europe on a completely unusual date for them.
Composed of 10 kitefliers, the Guatemalan delegation was one of most important Festival 2000. This manpower of kitefliers allowed a better representativeness in the public eyes.
Indonesia
The indonesian archipelago constitutes incontestably one of the high places of the kite in the world. Here kites "layang-layang", live so well harmonizes some with the men and the nature which one feels as in a sanctuary.
The diversity of the cultures, the natural insulation of the various islands which form Indonesia, supported the birth of very particular forms, and contribute to maintain a large variety among the layang-layang. In the indonesian archipelago cohabit vegetable kites, fighting kites, kites which are used for fishing. In Bali, we crosses also various kites, such as :
Be-bean : It is certainly the most popular of the Balinese kites. It reproduces a fish whose fins float with the wind. The Balineses regulate it so that it is balanced continuously in flight, imitating the stroke of a large fish
Janggan : Its body resembles that of a bird whose tail is prolonged by an immense drag which undulates in the wind. The head and the neck are in three dimensions. According to the mask which it carries, Janggan is bird or dragon.
Pecukan : The pecukan has the reputation to be difficult to make fly. We see some besides rather seldom in Bali, apart from the festival.
Korea
In Korea the kite is at the same time tool of play and symbol. The kite is used at the same time for the practice of the combat - where the Koreans prove to be of a frightening dexterity and a very great speed when it is a question of reeling or to roll up meters and meters of wire during a combat - but also to entrust to the winds the messages which one intends for the all-powerful sky.
Thus, in Korea during the first fifteen days of the year, we write on kites the name, the date of birth of the children whom one wants to protect from the evil geniuses and, when the kite is rather high, we cut the wire which retains it with the ground so that the wind carries it with far and entraine the spirits with its continuation.
The Creative Workshops
These workshops of creation allowed Dieppois, within the framework of workshops with recognized plastics technicians, to explore the field of plastic creation, to lead to the realization of work within the framework of a step of original creation. These workshops gave the opportunity to the participants to become, rightly, actors of the demonstration. In the second time, the fact of equipping the creative kite contest with a price "Creators in residence", their granted a recognition of their work and contributed to the support and the development of the kite of creation.
Theme of these workshops : "sky for ogee moulding" and "To write for the sky". Realization : August 2000.
"Tague your Rokkaku"
A popular graphic expression for a ludic object of colors sharp and contrasted, the tague is a direct form of plastic expression. Easily locatable in its urban environment. It constitutes an ideal decoration for Rokkaku, since in the evolutions of the combat, the kiteflyer and the public must be able to recognize it immediately.
The goal of the operation was to make it possible to each participant to adapt itself, through search for personal expression, the surface of a Rokkaku, then to learn how to him to make steal his kite so that he takes part in the fight envisaged during the festival.
The kite became the object of a development, the support of a personal expression, but also the representation of its author in the combat who opposed him to his competitors. This would lead the participants to define the message which their kite would carry, then to assume it at the time of engagements.
The Arch of the Children
Over a length of more than 2 kilometers length with 2 500 kites connected ones to the others, the Arch of the children was the largest flying arch having ever existed. Each child of Dieppe, in primary school, had the responsibility of decorate one with the elements of the Arch. The unit formed a long ribb on which carried high in the sky of Dieppe the texts and the drawings of the children. With the end of the demonstration each child recovered his kite.
An event which they reconize like theirs. Beyond the symbol, the children of Dieppe were the craftsmen of an open door towards an unbounded horizon (sea), craftsmen of the new millenium. There were others points of motivation and interest around this realization : to conceive and define by class a unit of message.
The Tree with Wishes
A structure in form of tree was established on the village of the kite so that the public can hang there his wishes registered on ribbons for the new millenium.
